This program provides a chance for talented individuals to step away from their teaching duties and collaborate with leading researchers at ARUA’s Centres of Excellence (CoEs) and Africa-Europe Clusters of Research Excellence (CoREs). The fellowship is designed to foster globally competitive research and build stronger academic networks within the continent and beyond.

Understanding the Fellowship’s Purpose

The core goal of the ARUA Early-career Research Fellowship is to strengthen the research capacity of emerging scholars. By offering dedicated time for research away from regular teaching responsibilities, the program allows fellows to immerse themselves in advanced projects. They will work alongside experienced mentors at host institutions, gaining valuable insights and developing their research skills. This initiative is particularly focused on supporting researchers from countries other than the host institution, promoting cross-border collaboration and knowledge exchange.

Key Responsibilities for Fellows

Selected fellows will play an active role in the research environment of their host institution. Their responsibilities include assisting in the spread of research findings from the CoE or CoRE. They will also engage in various studies under the guidance of their assigned mentor, contributing to the overall research output. A significant requirement is the publication of at least one academic paper in a high-impact journal, ideally with the fellow as the lead author. This publication should be accompanied by a policy brief or blog post to reach a wider audience.

Furthermore, fellows are expected to present their work at least twice and participate in technical workshops. These activities help disseminate research and foster connections with other researchers and stakeholders. Building and strengthening partnerships between the host CoE or CoRE and other relevant organizations is another important duty. These tasks ensure that fellows contribute meaningfully to the institution’s ongoing work and future collaborations.

Benefits and Support Provided

The ARUA Early-career Research Fellowship offers substantial benefits to its participants. Successful candidates will be contracted for a period of six months. During this time, they will receive a monthly stipend of US$2,000. The fellowship also covers a modest amount for accommodation and provides travel support, including a return ticket to the host institution. It is important to note that relocation expenses are not covered.

Additional financial assistance is available for eligible women who may need help with adjustments, such as childcare. Host CoEs will provide research fellows with dedicated office space, ensuring they have a conducive environment for their work. This comprehensive support package aims to remove barriers and allow fellows to focus on their research and professional development.

Eligibility Criteria for Applicants

To be considered for the ARUA Early-career Research Fellowship, applicants must meet specific criteria. They must be African nationals holding a PhD in a field related to the thematic area of the chosen Centre of Excellence or Cluster of Research Excellence. Applicants should have completed their PhD within the last five years. Preference is given to young faculty or research members at ARUA universities, though eligible candidates from non-ARUA universities can also apply.

Female postdoctoral fellows may be considered in limited circumstances. Applicants must be under 35 years old at the time of application. A strong track record of relevant research and a willingness to develop an international research reputation are essential. Fellows must be available to spend six months away from their home university and commit to returning afterward. They should be working on an ongoing project with readily available data that aligns with the fellowship’s goals. The program strongly encourages eligible women to apply, with at least 70% of the fellowships reserved for female candidates.

Application Process and Required Documents

The application process for the ARUA Early-career Research Fellowship requires several key documents. Applicants must submit a cover letter detailing their motivation, how they will fulfill the fellowship’s responsibilities, their relevant experience, and how they meet the eligibility criteria. The cover letter must specify the desired ARUA CoE or Africa-Europe CoRE. Applicants should also mention any previous time spent at the proposed host institution and suggest potential supervisors. Information regarding visa requirements and processing times is also necessary.

A full Curriculum Vitae (CV) is required, including personal details, PhD information, qualifications, research output, contributions to jointly authored publications, and details of two referees. Shortlisted candidates will need to have their referees submit a report assessing their suitability. A Letter of Support from the applicant’s home institution, confirming their suitability and intent to return, is also mandatory. Proof of PhD award, a brief concept note (maximum 1,500 words) outlining the proposed research project, and two academic writing samples (not from a doctoral thesis) are also needed. Finally, applicants must provide the biodata page of a valid passport.
