The Marshall Scholarship is a highly prestigious award for U.S. students aiming to pursue graduate studies in the United Kingdom. This scholarship is designed to foster intellectual distinction and strengthen ties between the U.S. and the UK. For those considering applying for the 2027 cohort, understanding the application process, eligibility, and expectations is key to crafting a successful submission. The Marshall Commission seeks candidates who show not only academic excellence but also leadership potential and a dedication to promoting U.S.-UK relations.

Understanding the Marshall Scholarship Application Process

The Marshall Scholarship program supports bright young Americans in their pursuit of higher education at any university in the UK. The selection process is thorough, involving multiple stages and requiring careful preparation well in advance. Applicants will need to complete an online application, secure endorsement from their undergraduate institution, and gather all necessary supporting documents, including recommendation letters, by strict deadlines. The review process is managed by eight regional committees across the U.S., which are responsible for interviewing promising candidates.

Essential Steps Before You Apply

Prospective applicants should start by thoroughly reviewing all official guidance provided by the Marshall Commission. This foundational step ensures a clear understanding of what is required. Key documents to consult include the eligibility requirements, which detail academic, citizenship, and residency criteria. It is also important to understand the different scholarship pathways, as candidates must choose only one, and applying for both will lead to disqualification. Familiarizing yourself with the “Rules for Candidates” is also essential, as these outline the program’s objectives and expectations, which are central to the selection committees’ evaluations. Finally, understanding the evaluation criteria—academic merit, leadership potential, and ambassadorial potential—will help shape your application narrative.

Navigating the Application Submission

The Marshall Scholarship application involves a collaborative effort between the applicant and their U.S. undergraduate institution. The process begins with completing the official online application form through the ASAMS system. This form requires direct input of all essays, personal statements, and other required information.

Once the applicant has completed their section, the application must be submitted through the system to their undergraduate institution. The institution then reviews the application for completeness and decides whether to endorse the candidate. If an institution chooses to endorse an application, it will add an official letter of endorsement and submit the full package to the appropriate regional committee. It is crucial for applicants to contact their institutional advisor early, as internal deadlines for endorsement can be significantly earlier than the official Marshall deadlines.

In addition to the institutional endorsement, three letters of recommendation are required. These letters must be submitted by the recommenders directly through the online system by the applicant deadline. It is important to note that each endorsing institution has a limit on the number of applications it can submit overall, though there is no limit on how many applications can be sent to a single region.

Key Deadlines for the 2027 Marshall Scholarship

All deadlines are set for 5:00 PM in the time zone of the endorsing institution.

Applicant and Recommender Deadline

The deadline for all applicants and their recommenders to submit their materials is September 29, 2026. No changes or additions can be made to the application after this date.

Institutional Endorsement Deadline

The endorsing institution must submit the final application, including the endorsement letter and all recommendation letters, by October 1, 2026. Applicants can monitor their application status online throughout this period.

Post-Submission Process

After applications are submitted, they undergo a rigorous review process. The applications are first reviewed by one of the eight regional centers located across the United States. Candidates who are shortlisted will be notified in early to mid-November and invited for an interview. Details regarding interview dates and preparation guidance will be provided on the Marshall website. Final selection decisions are made shortly after the interviews. Successful candidates will receive written notification and must accept or decline the award within five days. It is important to remember that all Marshall Scholarship awards are contingent upon the candidate successfully receiving an offer of admission from a UK university.
